Magh

The eleventh Nanakshahi month: Maghi at Sri Muktsar Sahib, mustard in bloom, and the Barah Maha lesson of the inner pilgrimage.

In short

Magh is the eleventh month of the Nanakshahi calendar, running from 13 January to 11 February. Its first day is Maghi, when Sikhs gather at Sri Muktsar Sahib to honour the Forty Mukte who fell there in 1705. In Punjab it is late winter turning to spring: mustard fields turn yellow, the cold begins to ease, and the Barah Maha hymns turn the month's ritual bathing into a lesson about purifying the mind.

Magh is the eleventh month of the Nanakshahi calendar, the Sikh solar year. It runs from 13 January to 11 February, and it opens with Maghi, when Sikhs gather at Sri Muktsar Sahib to honour the Forty Mukte, who gave their lives there in 1705. In Punjab, Magh is the turning point of winter: the mustard fields come into yellow flower, the bitter cold of Poh begins to loosen, and Basant announces that spring is coming.

What is Magh in the Nanakshahi calendar?

In the Nanakshahi calendar, adopted by the SGPC in 2003, every month has a fixed start date, and Magh always begins on 13 January. It has 30 days and ends on 11 February, when Phaggan begins. Magh is the eleventh of the twelve months, following Poh and coming before Phaggan, the last month of the year. Its name comes from the Barah Maha hymns of the Guru Granth Sahib, from which the calendar takes all twelve month names. See the Desi Mahine page and the Nanakshahi calendar page.

One honest note on dates: while the Nanakshahi months are fixed, a few observances of this season, among them Lohri and Basant, are still kept by the traditional Bikrami reckoning, so their Gregorian dates can shift by a day or so from year to year.

The season in Punjab: winter loosening its grip

In the calendar's seasonal cycle, Magh belongs to Himkar, late winter turning toward spring. The first half of the month still belongs to deep winter: cold nights, heavy morning fog, and frost that can nip young crops. As the weeks pass, the days grow visibly longer, the fog lifts earlier, and the sun regains its warmth. By the end of Magh the countryside has changed colour. The mustard crop, sown in autumn, stands waist high, covered in yellow flower, the surest sign in Punjab that spring has arrived.

Farming in Magh

For the farming year, Magh is a month of watching and waiting. The wheat crop is green and growing, and farmers guard it against late frost while watering as needed. The mustard is in full flower, drawing bees, and toward the month's end the first pods begin to set. Kitchen gardens and fodder crops feed households and cattle through the tail of winter, and sarson da saag, the mustard greens cooked all winter, is at its best now.

Maghi: the mela of the Forty Mukte

The first day of Magh is Maghi, one of the great gatherings of the Sikh year. Its home is Sri Muktsar Sahib, and its heart is a story from 1705. During the siege of Anandpur, forty Sikhs had left Guru Gobind Singh Ji, signing a written disclaimer, the bedava, renouncing him. Led by Mai Bhago, and moved by conscience, they returned to face the pursuing Mughal force and fought to the last beside the pool of Khidrana on 29 December 1705. The Guru cremated their bodies the next day, the first of Magh. He tore up the disclaimer, blessed the forty as the Mukte, the Liberated Ones, and renamed the pool Muktsar, the Pool of Liberation.

Every year on 1 Magh, tens of thousands of pilgrims gather at Muktsar for the three day Mela Maghi. They bathe in the sacred sarovar at dawn, hear the complete recital of the Guru Granth Sahib, kirtan and dhadi singing, and join the mahalla, the great procession that closes the mela by marching to Gurdwara Tibbi Sahib. Maghi is kept in gurdwaras everywhere, with recitations honouring the Forty Mukte, but Muktsar remains its home. The full story is told on our page about the Forty Mukte.

Basant Panchami: the yellow festival of the season

Later in the season comes Basant Panchami, the festival of Basant, spring itself. Unlike Maghi, fixed on 1 Magh, Basant Panchami is set by the lunar tithi, the fifth day of the bright half of the lunar month of Magha, so it falls in the Magh season in most years, in late January or early February. Punjab celebrates it in yellow: yellow clothes, yellow sweets, and mustard fields in bloom. Kites fill the sky over many towns, and at Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Lahore court, Basant was a famous festival, the Maharaja and his courtiers dressed head to toe in yellow, as in the painting at the top of this page.

Magh in the Barah Maha

The Guru Granth Sahib holds two Barah Maha hymns, songs of the twelve months, and both give Magh a special teaching. In Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Barah Maha in Raag Tukhari, Magh is the month of pilgrimage, and the pilgrimage is turned inward. The bride in the hymn realises that the sacred pool is within her: “ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਕੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੰਕੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵਾ ੤” “O my Beloved, beauteous Lord, listen: I sing Your glories. If it pleases You, I bathe in the sacred pool within.” The stanza closes: “ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਘਿ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਤਾ ੤” “O Nanak, in Magh the supreme essence is meditation on the Lord; this is the cleansing bath of the sixty eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage.”

Guru Arjan Dev Ji's Barah Maha in Raag Majh, the hymn read in gurdwaras on every sangrand, takes up the old custom of the ceremonial Magh bath and gives it a new meaning: “ਮਾਘਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂਆ ਧੂੜੀ ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ੤ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਨੋ ਕਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ੤” “In Magh, let your cleansing bath be in the dust of the company of the holy. Meditate on the Name of the Lord, listen to it, and share it with everyone.” The stanza teaches that kindness to all beings earns more merit than bathing at the sixty eight shrines, and it ends by saying that in Magh, those alone are counted pure whom the Perfect Guru blesses with His mercy.

The months around Magh

Magh is one of the twelve Desi Mahine, the Punjabi months of the Nanakshahi year. It follows Poh, the coldest month, and is followed by Phaggan, the last month of the year. The calendar the months belong to is explained on the Nanakshahi calendar page.

How many days are there in Magh?

Magh always has 30 days, from 13 January to 11 February. Unlike Phaggan, which gains a day in a leap year, Magh never changes its length.

When is Maghi in 2027?

Maghi falls on 1 Magh, which is 13 January in the fixed Nanakshahi calendar. In 2027 the Mela Maghi at Sri Muktsar Sahib will therefore gather on 13 January, and the mela runs for three days.
