The Desi Mahine are the twelve months of the Punjabi year, running from Chet in spring to Phaggan at the end of winter. The Gurus named them in the Barah Maha, and in 2003 they became the months of the Nanakshahi calendar, each fixed to the same Gregorian dates every year. Every month has its own season, its farm work, its gurpurabs and its verses.

The Desi Mahine are the twelve months of the Punjabi year: Chet, Vaisakh, Jeth, Harh, Sawan, Bhadon, Assu, Kattak, Magghar, Poh, Magh and Phaggan. They are the months of the farm and the seasons, named in the Guru Granth Sahib, where Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Arjan Dev Ji each wrote a Barah Maha. Since 2003 these same months, fixed to the solar year, have formed the Nanakshahi calendar.
What are the Desi Mahine?
Desi means local, of the land itself. The Desi Mahine are Punjab's own names for the twelve divisions of the year, used in its villages and towns for centuries. A Punjabi farmer still speaks of sowing in Assu and harvesting in Vaisakh, and the months carry the weather in their names: the blaze of Jeth and Harh, the rains of Sawan, the cold of Poh. The names are Punjabi forms of the old Indic month names, the names the Gurus themselves used: the Nanakshahi calendar's month names are taken from Gurbani.
For most of their history the Desi months were counted inside the Bikrami calendar, the lunisolar calendar of northern India. Its solar side fixed each month's first day, the sangrand, while its lunar side, the tithis, set the festivals. But the double reckoning drifted: lunar dates wandered against the seasons, and a gurpurab could fall twice in one Gregorian year or not at all.
From Bikrami roots to the Nanakshahi calendar
The months are older than Sikhism. In the Guru era they were simply how Punjab told the time: the dates of all ten Gurus were recorded in them. In the 1900s, Canadian Sikh scholar Pal Singh Purewal argued that the Panth needed a calendar of its own, accurate and fixed for all time. His design kept the twelve Desi months and their order, exactly as they appear in the Barah Maha, and pinned each one to a fixed Gregorian date.
The SGPC released Purewal's Nanakshahi calendar in 1999 and formally adopted it in 2003, counting the years from 1469, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth year. The year 2026 to 2027 is Nanakshahi 558. Three observances, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab, Hola Mohalla and Bandi Chhor Divas, were kept on their traditional movable dates as a compromise, and they still follow the older reckoning. Everything else in the Sikh year now falls on the same date every year.
The twelve Desi months
The year opens in spring and closes at winter's end. The first five months have 31 days, the next seven 30, with Phaggan taking an extra day in a leap year. Each month below has its own page: its dates, season, farm work, gurpurabs and verses.
Chet (ਚੇਤ), 14 March to 13 April. Spring opens the year: the Nanakshahi New Year and Hola Mohalla, when mustard is cut and wheat turns gold.
Vaisakh (ਵੈਸਾਖ), 14 April to 14 May. The harvest month, and Vaisakhi's month: on its first day in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib.
Jeth (ਜੇਠ), 15 May to 14 June. Summer takes hold; wheat is threshed and stored, fields readied for the rains.
Harh (ਹਾੜ), 15 June to 15 July. The year's fiercest heat, just before the monsoon; Guru Arjan Dev Ji's martyrdom is remembered in Harh.
Sawan (ਸਾਵਣ), 16 July to 15 August. The rains arrive, the paddy is transplanted, and Punjab turns its deepest green.
Bhadon (ਭਾਦੋਂ), 16 August to 14 September. The late monsoon; the Guru Granth Sahib's first parkash at Harmandir Sahib is marked in Bhadon.
Assu (ਅੱਸੂ), 15 September to 14 October. Autumn clears the skies; the kharif crops ripen and Guru Nanak Dev Ji's joti jot is remembered.
Kattak (ਕੱਤਕ), 15 October to 13 November. The Diwali season: Bandi Chhor Divas, and Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab at the full moon of Kattak.
Magghar (ਮੱਘਰ), 14 November to 13 December. Winter sets in; the SGPC calendar places Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Parkash Gurpurab and Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's martyrdom in Magghar.
Poh (ਪੋਹ), 14 December to 12 January. The coldest nights; the Sahibzade and Mata Gujri Ji are remembered for their martyrdom at Sirhind.
Magh (ਮਾਘ), 13 January to 11 February. The cold eases; the SGPC calendar marks Guru Gobind Singh Ji's parkash in Magh, and mustard comes into flower.
Phaggan (ਫੱਗਣ), 12 February to 13 March. The year closes as mustard blooms and days lengthen toward spring; a leap year gives it 31 days.
Sangrand: the first day of the month
Sangrand is the first day of a Desi month, from the Sanskrit sankranti, the sun's crossing into a new sign. In village Punjab it was a day of its own, announced by almanacs and marked by families. Gurdwaras still hold special diwans on sangrand, and in many, the new month's verse from Guru Arjan Dev Ji's Barah Maha is read out. In the fixed Nanakshahi calendar the sangrands never move: 1 Chet is always 14 March, 1 Vaisakh always 14 April.
The months in Gurbani: the Barah Maha
Two beloved compositions in the Guru Granth Sahib are built on these twelve months. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Barah Maha, in Raag Tukhari (Ang 1107 to 1110), and Guru Arjan Dev Ji's Barah Maha, in Raag Majh (Ang 133 to 136), both begin with Chet and walk through the year month by month. In each, the soul is a bride longing for God, and every season, spring blossom, Harh's blaze, Sawan's rains, Poh's cold, sharpens or soothes that longing. Both poems teach that no month is lucky or unlucky in itself: every month is blessed for the one who remembers God.
Seasons of the Desi year
Punjab's six traditional seasons pair the months: Basant (spring) covers Chet and Vaisakh; summer, Jeth and Harh; the rains, Sawan and Bhadon; autumn, Assu and Kattak; winter, Magghar and Poh; and late winter, Magh and Phaggan. The farm year follows: rabi crops sown in autumn are harvested in spring, kharif crops sown with the rains gathered in autumn.
How many months are in the Punjabi calendar?
Twelve: Chet, Vaisakh, Jeth, Harh, Sawan, Bhadon, Assu, Kattak, Magghar, Poh, Magh and Phaggan. The first five months have 31 days and the rest have 30, except Phaggan, which has 31 in a leap year.
What is the first Desi month?
Chet. The Punjabi year begins with Chet, in spring, and 1 Chet, the first day of the month, falls on 14 March. It is the Nanakshahi New Year, and both Barah Maha compositions begin with Chet.
What is Sangrand?
Sangrand is the first day of a Desi month, from sankranti, the sun's entry into a new sign. In the fixed Nanakshahi calendar every sangrand falls on the same Gregorian date every year, and gurdwaras mark it with special services, often including the Barah Maha verse for the month beginning.
Desi calendar vs Nanakshahi calendar: what is the difference?
They share the same twelve months. The difference is the reckoning. Traditionally kept, the Desi months belonged to the lunisolar Bikrami calendar: its festival dates, the tithis, move against the seasons, and its solar months slowly drift. The Nanakshahi calendar, designed by Pal Singh Purewal and adopted by the SGPC in 2003, keeps the Desi months but fixes them to the tropical solar year, so every month begins on the same Gregorian date forever, and counts its years from Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth in 1469. In everyday speech the two are often mixed, and a few great observances, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab and Hola Mohalla among them, are still kept by the traditional reckoning.
