It runs for 31 days, from its sangrand on 16 July to 15 August, through the heart of the monsoon, when the paddy fields stand green in their water and Punjab's villages celebrate Teeyan. It carries the Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Har Krishan Ji and the Miri Piri Diwas of Guru Hargobind Ji.

Sawan (ਸਾਵਣ) is the fifth month of the Nanakshahi calendar and of the traditional Punjabi desi year, one of the twelve Desi Mahine. It runs for 31 days, from its sangrand on 16 July to 15 August. Sawan is the heart of the monsoon: the rains settle in for weeks, the paddy fields stand green in their water, and the villages fill with the swings and songs of Teeyan, the women's festival of the rainy season. It follows Harh and is followed by Bhadon.
The month and its dates
Sawan has 31 days, from 16 July to 15 August in the fixed Nanakshahi calendar. It is the last of the five 31-day months. Its name is the Punjabi form of the old Indic month name Shravana. One thing sets Sawan apart from the other months in this set: its best-loved festival, Teeyan, is timed not by the solar Nanakshahi dates but by the lunar tithis of the traditional calendar, so it moves within the season from year to year. The SGPC's amended calendar likewise sets the month's Gurpurab by the traditional reckoning in some years, as noted below.
Season in Punjab
Sawan is the monsoon at full strength. Rain falls on most days, the air stays heavy and humid, and the rivers and canals run full. The countryside that was pale gold in Jeth is now deep green: paddy, maize, sugarcane and fodder all growing at once, ponds brimming, frogs calling through the night and peacocks calling after the showers. It is the very landscape Guru Nanak Dev Ji paints in his Sawan verses, of clouds pouring down and the earth quenched at last. The same abundance brings the month's troubles: waterlogged lanes, swollen drains and the risk of flood when the rain will not stop.
The farming cycle in Sawan
In the fields, Sawan is a month of growth rather than sowing. Transplanting is finished in the first days of the month, and the young paddy stands in flooded plots that farmers keep topped up with water, weeding between the rows as they work. Maize shoots upward, cotton squares and flowers, and fodder is plentiful enough for cattle to graze green for the first time since the spring. Farmers watch the crop and the sky together: steady rain in Sawan means a strong harvest in Assu and Kattak, while a long dry break or a flood can still undo the whole season.
Festivals and Gurpurabs in Sawan
Two days stand out in the fixed Nanakshahi calendar. On 6 Sawan, 21 July, comes Miri Piri Diwas, marking the day Guru Hargobind Ji took on the two swords of Miri and Piri, temporal and spiritual authority together. On 8 Sawan, 23 July, falls the Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Har Krishan Ji, the eighth Guru. In the SGPC's amended calendar the Parkash was kept by the traditional reckoning in 2026, on 7 August.
Sawan's folk heart is Teeyan, also called Teeyan Da Teohar, and Teej in some parts of Punjab: the festival of daughters, sisters and mothers, dedicated to the coming of the monsoon and celebrated by Punjabi women of every faith. It runs by the lunar calendar from the third day of the bright half of Sawan to the full moon, about thirteen days across July and August. Married women return to their parents' homes, in earlier times for the whole month. Swings, called peengh, are hung from the great trees of the village green, and women gather for giddha and boliyan. Brothers carry a gift set to their sisters called a sandhara: a Punjabi suit, laddoo, bangles, mehndi and a swing. The folklorist Devendra Satyarthi collected the Sawan songs sung at Teeyan in his book Giddha, published in 1936, and the season is traditionally rounded off by Rakhri near the end of Sawan, when sisters tie the thread on their brothers' wrists. Teeyan melas are still held across Punjab and in the diaspora.
Sawan in the Barah Maha
Guru Arjan Dev Ji opens the month in Raag Majh with a note of pure relief after the burning months: ਸਾਵਣਿ ਸਰਸੀ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਿਉ ਪਿਆਰੁ , which means: in the month of Sawan, the soul-bride is happy who falls in love with the Lord's lotus feet. Her mind and body, he says, are dyed in the love of the True One, and the one Name is her only support. The pleasures of corruption are false, and everything that is seen turns to ash; but the drops of the Lord's nectar are beautiful, and they are drunk in the company of the holy. Rain outside, in this verse, is answered by grace within.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in Raag Tukhari, begins by telling the mind to rejoice: the rainy season has come and the clouds are pouring. Yet his bride's Beloved has gone abroad and does not come home; the flash of lightning frightens her, her bed is lonely, and without the Lord she knows neither sleep nor hunger. The verse settles the contrast in one line: ਸਾਵਣੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਸੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰੁ , Sawan is delightful for those fortunate brides who wear the necklace of the Lord's Name in their hearts.
When is Teeyan celebrated?
Teeyan is kept by the lunar calendar, from the third day of the bright half of Sawan to the full moon of the month, about thirteen days that fall across July and August. The solar month of Sawan itself always runs from 16 July to 15 August.
Which Gurpurabs fall in Sawan?
In the fixed Nanakshahi calendar, Sawan carries Miri Piri Diwas on 6 Sawan (21 July) and the Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Har Krishan Ji on 8 Sawan (23 July). In 2026 the SGPC's calendar kept the Parkash on 7 August by the traditional reckoning.
How many days are there in Sawan?
Sawan has 31 days. It is the fifth and last of the 31-day months of the Nanakshahi year; from Bhadon onward every month has 30 days.
