Harh (ਹਾੜ੍ਹ), called Asarh in Gurbani and in the older calendar, is the fourth month of the Nanakshahi calendar and of the traditional Punjabi desi year, one of the twelve Desi Mahine. It runs for 31 days, from its sangrand on 15 June to 15 July. Harh begins in the fiercest heat of the summer and ends with the arrival of the monsoon, so that within a single month Punjab passes from dust and loo winds to the first green of the flooded paddy fields. It follows Jeth and is followed by Sawan.
The month and its dates
Harh has 31 days: 1 Harh is 15 June and the month ends on 15 July in the fixed Nanakshahi calendar. The name is the Punjabi form of the old Indic month name Ashadha. In the Guru Granth Sahib's Barah Maha the same month is called Asarh, the form used by both Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Arjan Dev Ji, while in everyday Punjabi speech the month is simply Harh. As with Jeth, the fixed dates on this page belong to the 2003 Nanakshahi calendar; the SGPC's amended calendar works several of the month's observances out from the traditional lunar tithis, and those differences are given with each Gurpurab below.
Season in Punjab
Harh holds two seasons inside one month. Its first half is high summer: the loo still blows, dust storms roll across the plains, and the heat that built up through Jeth reaches its peak. Then the pattern breaks. The south-west monsoon usually starts over Punjab in the last week of June and covers the whole state by the first week of July. The first heavy showers cool the earth, refill the ponds and keep the sky grey for days at a time. Humidity replaces dust, and after a shower the whole countryside smells of wet soil.
The farming cycle in Harh
Harh is the hardest-working month of the farming year. As the rains arrive, farmers puddle their fields and transplant the paddy seedlings raised in the Jeth nurseries into the flooded plots, the work on which the whole kharif harvest depends. Transplanting runs from late June through July, much of it still done by hand, row by row, in standing water. Cotton is weeded, maize and fodder crops are sown with the first rains, and the sugarcane grows fast in the new humidity. A timely monsoon in Harh means full canals and wells for the rest of the season; a late one keeps every farmer watching the sky.
Festivals and Gurpurabs in Harh
The month's great observance is the Shaheedi Gurpurab of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru, who was martyred at Lahore in 1606. In the fixed Nanakshahi calendar it falls on 2 Harh, which is 16 June. In the SGPC's amended calendar the day is kept by the traditional reckoning; in 2026 it was observed on 18 June. In the heat of Harh the day carries a custom filled with the Guru's own spirit of serving everyone: chabeel, stalls that serve sweetened, chilled water to every passer-by, are set up outside gurdwaras and along the roads across Punjab.
The Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Guru, is placed by the fixed calendar on 21 Harh, which is 5 July; the SGPC calendar kept it on 30 June in 2026. The original Nanakshahi calendar also lists 18 Harh as the foundation day of Sri Akal Takht Sahib at Amritsar, the seat of temporal authority that Guru Hargobind Ji raised facing Sri Harmandir Sahib.
Harh in the Barah Maha
Guru Arjan Dev Ji opens the month in Raag Majh with a line that every Punjabi summer explains: ਆਸਾੜੁ ਤਪੰਦਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਹੁ ਨ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਪਾਸਿ , which means: the month of Asarh seems burning hot to those who do not have the Husband Lord with them. The verse goes on to warn those who abandon the Life of the World and pin their hopes on mere mortals: love of duality ruins a person, we reap as we sow, and the night of life slips away in regret. But it does not end in despair, because those who meet the holy are liberated in the Lord's court. The burning month, in other words, burns only the separated.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in Raag Tukhari, still calls the month good: ਆਸਾੜੁ ਭਲਾ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਗਗਨਿ ਤਪੈ , Asarh is good; the sun blazes in the sky. His picture is unsparing: the earth suffers as the fire of the sun dries up her moisture, crickets chirp in the woods, and the sun's chariot rolls on without tiring. In that scorched world the soul-bride goes looking for shade, the peace that comes from holding her Beloved in mind.
When is the Shaheedi Gurpurab of Guru Arjan Dev Ji?
In the fixed Nanakshahi calendar it falls on 2 Harh, 16 June. In the SGPC's amended calendar the day is set by the traditional reckoning, and in 2026 it was observed on 18 June. Across Punjab it is marked with kirtan, ardas and chabeel seva.
When does the monsoon reach Punjab?
The south-west monsoon usually starts over Punjab in the last week of June and covers the state by the first week of July, in the second half of Harh. It stays active through Sawan and Bhadon and into the middle of September.
Why is Harh also called Asarh?
Harh is the everyday Punjabi form of the old Indic month name Ashadha. Gurbani uses the form Asarh, which is why both Barah Maha poems address this month as Asarh even though the calendar and the village call it Harh.
