Literal meaning

Akkh is the eye and taara is a star. The 'star of the eye' is the bright point at the centre of your vision — the thing your eyes are drawn to. It is a poetic way of saying: this person is what my eyes love to look at.

The image works on two levels: a star is bright and precious, and the eye is the most precious of the senses. To call someone your eye's star is to say they are doubly precious.

What it really means

The phrase is used for someone deeply loved and treasured — most often a child, a favourite grandchild, or a dearly loved younger sibling. 'Mera putt meri akkh da taara hai' means my son is the light of my life.

It expresses not just love but pride and protectiveness. The star of your eye is someone you would shield from harm, someone whose happiness is your happiness. It is almost always affectionate and is never used sarcastically.

Cultural context

This muhavra is a staple of Punjabi folk songs and lullabies, where mothers sing to their children as their akkh da taara. It belongs to the warm, domestic register of the language — heard in homes far more than in offices or streets.

Many languages have an equivalent: English has 'the apple of my eye', and the idea of the beloved as the light of one's eyes runs through Persian and Urdu poetry too, which has deeply influenced Punjabi expression.
