In short

Beej is the seed — the small, hard beginning of every crop, and in wider speech the origin of anything. Good seed is the cheapest insurance a crop has.

Meaning

ਬੀਜ (beej) is the seed — the small, hard beginning of every crop. But in Punjabi the word reaches further than the field: the beej is the origin of anything, the first cause from which a thing grows. A quarrel has its beej; an idea has its beej.

For the farmer, beej is a practical obsession. Good seed — clean, healthy, true to variety — is the cheapest insurance a crop has. Old farmers kept their own seed from the best ears of wheat; today most buy certified seed, but the instinct is the same: everything starts with the beej.

Origin and etymology

The word comes from Sanskrit ਬੀਜ (bīja), seed — one of the oldest agricultural words in the Indian languages, unchanged in meaning for thousands of years.

Cultural context

Sowing day was once a small ceremony: the farmer would test the seed, pray over it, and walk the field scattering or drilling it with care. Seed exchange between neighbours was ordinary village economy — you gave your best wheat seed to the man whose crop had failed. Modern Punjab has moved to certified and hybrid seed sold in packets, and the old practice of saving seed has faded; but in speech the beej remains the perfect image of beginnings, used by poets and preachers as freely as by farmers.
