ਭੂਆ (bhua) is your father's sister. A senior and influential figure, she plays a central role in weddings and family decisions.
Meaning
ਭੂਆ (bhua) is the Punjabi word for your father's sister — your paternal aunt. She is the mirror image of the ਮਾਸੀ (masi, mother's sister): where the masi belongs to the mother's side, the bhua belongs to the father's, and Punjabi never confuses the two. Her husband is your ਫੁੱਫੜ (phuphar).
The bhua holds a distinctive position because she is both an insider and an outsider: born into your father's family, married into another. This gives her a particular kind of authority — she knows the family's history intimately, yet she speaks with the independence of someone who now runs her own household.
She is addressed as ਭੂਆ ਜੀ. Children often experience her as formidable when young and deeply loving once grown; the bhua who scolded you at twelve is frequently the one who fights hardest for you at twenty-two.
Cultural context
In Punjabi family life, the bhua is a power centre. Because she was raised in the household, her opinion on family matters carries the weight of an elder, and because she married out, she is seen as impartial. Matchmaking, wedding arrangements, and the settling of disputes between brothers routinely pass through her.
Punjabi humour has made a minor legend of her husband, the ਫੁੱਫੜ — the stock comic figure of the perpetually offended wedding guest who must be coaxed and honoured before the celebrations can proceed. The joke is affectionate, and it testifies to how seriously the bhua's family is taken: no celebration is complete until the bhua and phuphar have been properly received.
At weddings in her birth family, the bhua has ceremonial roles and gives ਸ਼ਗਨ. For brides especially, the bhua is often a confidante and protector — the senior woman of the father's house who understands exactly what the new bride is walking into, because she once walked out of it herself.
