In short

ਮਾਸੀ (masi) is your mother's sister. Often described as a second mother, she is one of the most beloved figures in Punjabi family life.

Meaning

ਮਾਸੀ (masi) is the Punjabi word for your mother's sister — your maternal aunt. It is a small word that carries enormous affection: ask Punjabis about their masi and you will hear, again and again, that she is "like a second mother." Her husband is your ਮਾਸੜ (masar).

The masi is strictly maternal — the paternal aunt is ਭੂਆ (bhua), a different word and a different relationship entirely. Punjabi keeps the two sides of the family lexically separate, and the masi belongs firmly to the mother's side, sharing the mother's family name, village, and history.

She is addressed as ਮਾਸੀ ਜੀ. Because she is usually close in age to the mother and shares her upbringing, children often find in their masi a version of their mother who has more time, fewer rules, and an endless supply of secrets about what their mother was really like growing up.

Cultural context

The masi occupies a unique emotional position: she has a mother's authority without a mother's responsibilities. Children confide in their masi about things they would never tell their parents — first crushes, school troubles, dreams they are afraid to say aloud. The masi keeps these confidences, and this trust is one of the defining features of the relationship.

In practical terms, the masi is often the mother's closest ally within the extended family. Sisters who married into different households remain each other's first call in joy and crisis, and their children grow up as something closer than cousins. At family gatherings, the masi is frequently the one who notices which child is quiet, who needs new clothes, who needs encouragement.

Punjabi sayings and songs celebrate this bond. The phrase "ਮਾਸੀ ਮਾਂ ਵਰਗੀ" (masi is like a mother) is not a polite formula — it is a description of how the relationship actually functions, especially for children who spend long stretches at their masi's home.
