In short

ਦਾਦੀ (dadi) is your father's mother. The matriarch of the paternal home, she runs the household and anchors family tradition.

Meaning

ਦਾਦੀ (dadi) is the Punjabi word for your father's mother — your paternal grandmother. She is the counterpart of the ਨਾਨੀ (nani, mother's mother): the dadi belongs to the father's side, the household the children are born into. Like all Punjabi kinship terms, the distinction is exact and never blurred.

In the traditional joint family, the dadi is the undisputed manager of the domestic world. While the ਦਾਦਾ (dada) handled land and money, the dadi ran the kitchen, raised the children, managed the daughters-in-law, and kept the family's rituals on schedule. Her authority inside the home was absolute.

She is addressed as ਦਾਦੀ ਜੀ. Grandchildren who grow up in her house know her as the first face of the morning and the last voice at night — the person whose lap is always available and whose scolding never quite sticks.

Cultural context

The dadi is the guardian of the family's customs. She knows which ritual is performed on which day, how the festival foods are made, what the new bride must wear and when. In a culture where much of this knowledge was never written down, the dadi was the institution that preserved it — and in many homes, she still is.

Her relationship with her daughters-in-law is one of Punjabi culture's most written-about dynamics: a complex blend of authority, affection, friction, and eventual deep love. The dadi trains the new bride in the household's ways, and over the years the two often become inseparable allies.

For the grandchildren raised under her roof, the dadi is simply home. She wakes them for school, feeds them after, tells them stories, defends them from their parents' anger, and prays for them daily. Punjabi literature is full of dadi figures — wise, sharp-tongued, endlessly loving — because nearly every Punjabi has been raised by one, literally or in spirit.
