In short

ਨਾਨੀ (nani) is your mother's mother. Keeper of family stories, recipes, and remedies, she is the beloved heart of the ਨਾਨਕਾ.

Meaning

ਨਾਨੀ (nani) is the Punjabi word for your mother's mother — your maternal grandmother. With the ਨਾਨਾ (nana, mother's father), she makes up the ਨਾਨਕੇ, the maternal grandparents' household that looms so large in Punjabi childhood. The paternal grandmother, by contrast, is ਦਾਦੀ (dadi) — a different word for a different relationship.

If the nana is the nanke's authority, the nani is its soul. She is the cook of legendary meals, the keeper of home remedies, the teller of stories, and the person to whom every grandchild runs first on arrival. The bond between nani and grandchildren is proverbial for its closeness.

She is addressed as ਨਾਨੀ ਜੀ, though many grandchildren use more intimate forms. "ਨਾਨੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ" — nani's stories — is practically a genre unto itself in Punjabi culture.

Cultural context

The nani is the family's memory. She knows the recipes no cookbook contains, the remedies for every childhood ailment, and the stories of ancestors the grandchildren never met. In an oral culture, she was the archive — and even today, when a Punjabi family wants to know "how did our family come to this village," it is the nani who tells it.

Her kitchen is legendary. Dishes like ਪਿੰਨੀਆਂ (pinniyan), ਸਰਸੋਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਗ (sarson da saag), and ਦੇਸੀ ਘਿਓ ਦੀਆਂ ਰੋਟੀਆਂ taste different at nani's house — or so every grandchild insists. She feeds visiting grandchildren with a determination that borders on the military, and no one leaves hungry.

The nani also plays a diplomatic role. As the mother's mother, she is the person the mother herself turns to, and her counsel steadies the whole maternal side of the family. Her blessings — given with a hand on the head and words in the old idiom — are among the most cherished moments of any family visit.
