Garmi is the Punjabi word for heat and the summer season — fierce sun, cool drinks, and long bright days.
Meaning
Garmi means heat, and by extension the summer season. Punjab's garmi is famous and formidable: from April the temperature climbs, and May and June bring the fierce loo winds and afternoons when the earth shimmers.
The word also means warmth in the pleasant sense — the garmi of the sun after winter, of a hearth, of hospitality. Context tells whether garmi is to be enjoyed or endured.
Origin and etymology
Garmi is built on garm, hot, from the Persian garm (گرم), meaning warm or hot. The Persian root came into Punjabi centuries ago and feels entirely native today.
The same root gives garmana (to heat) and garam as used across North India — one of the region's most widespread word-families.
Cultural context
Punjabi summer has its own genius for relief. Lassi — thick, cold, topped with malai — is the drink of garmi; shade trees, cool courtyards and afternoon naps order the day; and mangoes, the king of summer fruit, are celebrated like a festival.
School summer holidays, the long bright evenings, and the monsoon's promised arrival shape the season. Punjabis meet garmi with practical wisdom: rise early, rest at noon, and drink lassi.
