ਜਥੇਦਾਰ

jathedar
Say itju-thay-DAARTypeNoun
In short

A jathedar is the leader of a jatha — and the Jathedar of the Akal Takht is the highest temporal authority in Sikhism.

Meaning

A jathedar is the leader or commander of a jatha — a band, group or contingent. In ordinary Sikh life, any organised group's head may be called its jathedar: the jathedar of a kirtan jatha, of a volunteer team, of a procession.

But the word carries its greatest weight in one office: the Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the Throne of the Timeless One at Amritsar. He is the highest temporal authority for the Sikh Panth — the one who issues hukamnamas (edicts) on panthic matters, calls the Sarbat Khalsa, and speaks for the community's collective conscience. His pronouncements from the Akal Takht are treated as binding on the Panth.

Origin and history

The title comes from the eighteenth century, when the Khalsa organised itself into jathas and misls — mobile bands that kept the Sikh resistance alive through decades of persecution. Each jatha followed its jathedar, and the great Sarbat Khalsa gatherings at Amritsar were assemblies of jathedars deciding the Panth's course together.

The modern office of the Akal Takht Jathedar developed with the Singh Sabha movement and the SGPC in the twentieth century, which formalised how the Jathedar is appointed and how the Takht's authority is exercised.

Cultural context

Because the Jathedar speaks for the Panth, the office is both revered and contested — Sikhs follow the Akal Takht's edicts with deep seriousness, and they debate them with equal seriousness. An edict on a social or religious question can move the entire community.

At the local level, being made a jathedar — of a gurdwara committee's sevadar team, of a Nagar Kirtan — is a mark of trust: the community putting its work in someone's hands.
