In short

ਮਾਮਾ (mama) is your mother's brother. In Punjabi culture the mama holds a uniquely honoured place, central to weddings and family celebrations.

Meaning

ਮਾਮਾ (mama) is the Punjabi word for your mother's brother — your maternal uncle. It is one of the most emotionally loaded words in the Punjabi family vocabulary, because the mama is not just a relative but a figure of special honour. His wife is your ਮਾਮੀ (mami), and his home — ਮਾਮੇ ਦਾ ਘਰ — is for many children the happiest place outside their own.

The word is never confused with its neighbours: a mama is maternal, while the paternal uncles are ਤਾਇਆ and ਚਾਚਾ. The distinction is absolute in Punjabi, and mixing them up marks a speaker immediately as an outsider to the culture.

He is addressed as ਮਾਮਾ ਜੀ, and the relationship between a mama and his ਭਾਣਜਾ (bhanja, sister's son) or ਭਾਣਜੀ (bhanji, sister's daughter) is proverbial for warmth — Punjabi has an entire emotional register built around it.

Cultural context

No relation in the Punjabi family is more ceremonially honoured than the mama. At a Sikh wedding, the bride's or groom's mama has prescribed roles: he often leads parts of the celebration, gives ਸ਼ਗਨ, and his presence is considered essential to the family's honour. To have no mama present at a wedding is felt as a genuine absence, and families go to great lengths to bring him.

This honour flows from an older logic. In the traditional system, a woman married into another village and her brother remained her lifelong protector and link to her birth family. The mama was the one who stood by his sister, and by extension her children, through every difficulty. The modern family has changed the economics, but the sentiment survives intact.

For children, ਮਾਮੇ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਜਾਣਾ — going to mama's house — is synonymous with being spoiled: extra sweets, fewer rules, and stories about their mother as a little girl. It is no accident that so many Punjabi childhood memories are set there.
