In short

To touch the forehead to the ground — the deepest Punjabi gesture of reverence, offered at gurdwaras and to elders.

Literal meaning

Mattha is the forehead, tekna is to touch or place down. The literal act is lowering the forehead to the ground — the body folded in complete surrender, the highest part of the self laid lowest.

It is reverence made physical. Words can be empty; the forehead on the ground cannot be faked.

What it really means

The saying means to pay deep respects — most often before the Guru Granth Sahib in the gurdwara, where Sikhs touch their foreheads to the ground in devotion. It is also offered to revered elders, saints, and sacred places.

Figuratively, it means complete humility and submission: to 'tek mattha' before someone is to acknowledge their greatness without reservation.

Cultural context

Mattha tekna is the central physical act of Sikh devotion, performed on entering any gurdwara. It expresses the core Sikh teaching of humility before the divine — the ego (haumai) laid down.

The gesture extends beyond religion into Punjabi social life: touching an elder's feet with the forehead at weddings and festivals, or bowing before the threshold of a new home. Wherever deep respect is owed, the forehead goes down.
