In short

Peena is the Punjabi verb "to drink" — water, tea, lassi, and everything in between.

Meaning

Peena means to drink: to take liquid in. "Pani peena" (to drink water), "cha peena" (to drink tea) — the verb serves every beverage from the well to the teacup.

In its most honoured use, peena is hospitality itself. "Pani peena" offered to a guest is the first welcome; sharing tea is the daily sacrament of friendship and business alike.

Origin and etymology

Peena is an old verb of the region's speech for drinking, among the most basic verbs in the language. Verbs for drinking water are never borrowed — they are inherited from the beginning.

Its forms across the neighbouring languages raise the same cup.

Cultural context

Punjabi drinking culture centres on the good drinks: lassi, the thick yogurt drink of summer; cha (tea), the all-day social fuel; and the simple glass of water offered to every guest before anything else.

"Cha peeni?" (shall we have tea?) opens conversations, seals deals and welcomes visitors. In a land of heat and hard work, offering drink is offering life.
