ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂਦਾਰ

In short

A zamindar is the landowner — the man whose name is on the land records. Under British rule the word marked the top of the rural order; today it loosely means any substantial farmer.

Meaning

ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂਦਾਰ (zamindar) is the landowner — the person who holds agricultural land. In the village the zamindar was the man of standing: his name on the land records, his house the biggest in the lane, his word carrying weight in the panchayat. Below him stood tenants and labourers who worked land they did not own.

In modern Punjab the word is used more loosely for any substantial farmer — “he is a big zamindar” means he farms a large holding. It has lost the sharp class edge it carried under British rule and become a description of scale.

Origin and etymology

The word comes from Persian: ਜ਼ਮੀਨ (zamin), land, joined with ਦਾਰ (dar), holder or keeper. A zamindar is literally “the holder of land.” Persian was the language of administration in Mughal and early British India, and it gave Punjabi many of its words for revenue and landholding.

Cultural context

Under British rule the zamindar stood at the top of the rural order — collecting rents, advancing loans, settling disputes. After independence, land reforms and the abolition of zamindari weakened the old hierarchy, but the word stayed in the language. In folk songs a “zamindar” is the prosperous farmer with tube-wells, a tractor and acres of wheat; in everyday talk it simply marks a man whose life is his land.
