Punjab's agriculture department says stubble-burning cases have dropped sharply this Kharif season, crediting wider use of crop-residue machines.

Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian said on September 24 that farmers have bought 16,227 crop residue management machines this season with the help of Rs 183 crore in subsidy.

The minister claimed a 90 percent fall in fire incidents compared to the corresponding period, linking it to subsidised machinery, custom hiring centres and field outreach. The state has been under pressure every winter over air quality in the northern plains, and officials say they will keep monitoring through the harvest window.
