Jallianwala Bagh is the national memorial in Amritsar to the hundreds killed when British troops opened fire on an unarmed gathering on 13 April 1919. The walled garden preserves the bullet-marked walls, the Martyrs' Well and the Flame of Liberty, and its galleries and evening light-and-sound show tell the story of the massacre that turned India decisively against British rule.

Where is Jallianwala Bagh?
Jallianwala Bagh stands in the old city of Amritsar, about a kilometre from the Golden Temple, in the crowded lanes behind the main bazaars. It is a walled garden and a national memorial, entered through the same narrow passage that Dyer's soldiers used in 1919. Most visitors walk over after paying their respects at the Golden Temple, since the two sit within easy walking distance of each other.
What happened here on 13 April 1919?
The 13th of April was Baisakhi, the spring harvest festival, and thousands had come into Amritsar for the day. Many gathered at Jallianwala Bagh for a public meeting against the arrest of two nationalist leaders, Dr Satyapal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew, who had opposed the Rowlatt Act, a law that let the colonial government jail Indians without trial. Days earlier, the military commander in Amritsar, Colonel Reginald Dyer, holding the temporary rank of brigadier-general, had banned public gatherings, though few in the crowd had heard the order.
Dyer marched into the Bagh with 25 Gurkha and 25 Baluchi soldiers armed with rifles, 40 more men armed only with blades, and two armoured cars. Without giving any warning to disperse, he ordered his riflemen to fire into the densest parts of the crowd. The garden was walled on all sides, so the only way out was the narrow alley that the soldiers themselves had blocked. The firing went on for about ten minutes, until the soldiers had spent some 1,650 rounds. People were shot down as they ran, and many jumped into the garden's well to escape the bullets. A later British investigation put the dead at 379, the wounded at about three times that number, while Indian historians have put the toll at around a thousand.
The aftermath
Dyer later told the inquiry he had wanted to make a wide impression, and he showed no regret for the shooting. The Hunter Committee, the British inquiry into the Punjab disturbances, censured his actions. The army removed him from his command and told him he would get no further employment in India. In England he stayed a divisive figure: some praised him and raised a fund in his name, while in Parliament Winston Churchill called the massacre an event that could never be justified.
The killings shook India. The poet Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel laureate, gave up his British knighthood in protest. Twenty-one years later, the revolutionary Udham Singh, born in 1899 in Punjab's Sangrur district, shot dead Sir Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in London on 13 March 1940, holding him responsible for the massacre.
The memorial today
In 1951 the Government of India turned the garden into a national memorial. The American architect Benjamin Polk designed it, and India's first president, Dr Rajendra Prasad, inaugurated it. At the centre stands a 30-foot pylon in a shallow tank, its stone lanterns carved with the Ashok Chakra and the words 'In memory of martyrs, 13 April 1919'. The Eternal Flame of Liberty burns near the entrance.
The bullet marks are still visible on the old walls, and the spot from which the firing was ordered has been marked. The well into which people jumped, now called the Martyrs' Well, is preserved, and a Martyrs' Gallery shows portraits of freedom fighters.
In 2021 the complex was renovated and rededicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 August. Four museum galleries were created inside old buildings, using projection mapping, 3D displays and sculpture to tell the story of Punjab in that period. The Shaheedi well and the flame monument were restored, a water body was turned into a lily pond, paths were widened, and new areas were made for the Salvation Ground, the Amar Jyot and a flag mast.
Visiting Jallianwala Bagh
The memorial sits about a kilometre from the Golden Temple, so most visitors walk over after paying their respects there. It opens at 6 in the morning and closes at 7 in the evening in summer, and runs 7 to 6 in winter. The gallery keeps shorter hours: 9 to 5 in summer, 10 to 4 in winter. Every evening after sunset, a light-and-sound show retells the events of 13 April 1919, narrated in the voice of the actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Why it still matters
Jallianwala Bagh marks the moment when many Indians stopped believing British rule could be reformed. The massacre is remembered across India as one of the darkest days of the freedom struggle, and every year on 13 April the nation honours the dead at the memorial. For visitors from Punjab, the garden is also a local story: the dead were farmers, traders and festival-goers from Amritsar and the villages around it.
