Where is Jindrai?

Jindrai is a village in Pathankot tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sujanpur, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sujanpur community development block and is served by the Jindrai Uprali,Jindrai gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027416, and it covers 248 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,552 people in Jindrai: 801 men and 751 women, living in 310 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 248 hectares, the population density works out to about 626 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 938 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 180, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 270 people, about 17 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.97 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.13 per cent and women at 69.66 per cent. The census recorded 361 workers, about 23 per cent of the village. Of the 356 main workers, the largest group, 244, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 54 agricultural labourers and 50 cultivators on their own land. A further 5 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Jindrai's land. Of the village's 248 hectares, 203 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (9 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (194 hectares). About 13 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. The census recorded 52 cultivators and 57 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
