Harmeet Kaur Dhillon has resigned as head of the United States Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, becoming the first senior department official to leave after the Democrats swept the midterm elections. Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed on Thursday, 5 November, that he had accepted her resignation.

Dhillon, a Chandigarh-born lawyer and longtime ally of President Donald Trump, had led the division since April 2025, after being nominated in December 2024 and confirmed by the Senate. Her 18-month tenure reshaped one of the most closely watched parts of the Justice Department.

She says she resigned weeks ago

Dhillon said she had decided to step down weeks before polling day but delayed the announcement at the request of White House chief of staff Susie Wiles. 'I wasn't asked to resign,' she said. 'I resigned three weeks ago, and Susie asked me to please wait until after the midterms.' She formally submitted her resignation on Thursday and said she planned to return to private practice in California, at the Dhillon Law Group she founded.

Blanche credited her with leading the division 'with conviction the past 18 months', and she said she had achieved what she set out to do in Washington.

Eighteen months of change

Under Dhillon, the Civil Rights Division moved sharply away from its traditional focus on protecting voting rights and investigating local police departments, and toward the Trump administration's priorities, including gun rights and action against antisemitism on university campuses.

In 2025 she directed the division's Voting Section to demand unredacted voter-registration lists from states, and in July she sent Texas officials a letter calling four Democratic-held congressional districts unconstitutional racial gerrymanders and urging the state to redraw them. The redrawing that followed was designed to help Republicans win five more seats in the midterms, but the plan largely failed on Tuesday, when Democrats flipped two Texas districts that had not been redrawn and Republicans won only one of the five targeted seats.

In the final months before the election she also oversaw the largest election-monitoring operation in the division's history, dispatching about 1,000 monitors and observers to all 50 states on Election Day.

Why now

Reports from MS NOW said Dhillon had grown frustrated that she was not promoted to deputy attorney general or given another senior post, and that she had tensions with Blanche and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward. Some White House figures view the timing as embarrassing, coming two days after Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate.

Dhillon has not publicly given a detailed reason for leaving, and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Her replacement will be nominated by the president and must be confirmed by the Senate.
