About the book

Chhangiya Rukh — "The Lopped Tree," published in English as Against the Night — is the autobiography of Balbir Madhopuri and a landmark in Punjabi letters: the first Dalit autobiography in Punjabi, and the first to appear in English. First published in Punjabi in 2002, it was translated into English by Tripti Jain and published by Oxford University Press in 2010, when it was shortlisted for the Crossword Award in translation — the first time Punjabi books had made that list.

The title is the book's central image. A lopped tree is cut back, stunted, denied its full growth — and yet it puts out fresh branches and leaves. Madhopuri's life, and the life of his community as he tells it, is that stubborn regrowth: potential slashed and dwarfed by caste, asserting itself anyway.

The 2002 publication date places Chhangiya Rukh in a significant lineage. Marathi Dalit autobiography had its classics by the 1980s; Hindi had its own wave in the 1990s. Punjabi, despite its large Dalit population and its history of the Ad-Dharm movement, had nothing comparable — the community's story had been told by others or not at all. Madhopuri's book filled that silence, and its success proved the silence had been structural, not natural: readers were waiting.
## Life & themes

Madhopuri was born in 1955 in Madhopur village, Jalandhar district, into a Dalit family, and worked as a child labourer and agricultural worker before educating himself to a postgraduate degree in Punjabi. The autobiography moves between the village of his childhood and the Delhi of his adult life as a journalist and government publications officer, drawing a continuous line between rural untouchability and urban caste prejudice.

Its themes are the classic ones of Dalit life-writing — humiliation, exclusion, poverty as fate — but with a distinctive Punjabi inflection: the book traces the social history of the Dalit community in Punjab, the caste relations built on prejudice and inequality, and the specific role of education as the weapon of liberation. Madhopuri's conclusion, stated plainly, is that the most important thing for Dalits today is to get educated and stand on their own feet.

The book also works as social documentation: how discrimination operated in the feudal countryside, how it mutated in the city, how even basic amenities had to be fought for. Scholars have noted its importance as a narrative of resistance — pain transformed, by the act of writing, into a claim for dignity.

Education is the book's hero as much as Madhopuri is. The narrative returns obsessively to classrooms, examinations, degrees — each one a small emancipation. The postgraduate degree in Punjabi, earned against every odd, is presented not as personal triumph alone but as a political act: the lopped tree proving it can still grow. This emphasis gives the memoir its constructive edge. It is not only a record of what caste does to people; it is an argument about what defeats it.
## The author

Balbir Madhopuri (b. 1955) is a Punjabi poet — with three collections of poetry — translator, journalist, and editor, now Director and Editor of the quarterly Samkali Sahit with the Punjabi Sahit Sabha, New Delhi. He has authored fourteen books in Punjabi, translated extensively, and edited forty. He worked in the Publications Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, editing the Punjabi Yojana. His novel Mitti Bol Payi won the Dhahan Prize for Punjabi Literature in 2021. It is above all Chhangiya Rukh, though, that made him a major figure — the book that carried a village boy's story to readers in Hindi, English, Shahmukhi, and Urdu.

Madhopuri's parallel life as a poet matters. Before the autobiography, he had published poetry collections — Maroothal da Birkh (1992), Bhakhda Patal (1998) — and the poet's discipline shows in the memoir's best passages: the controlled image, the refusal of self-pity, the anger kept at exactly the temperature where it illuminates rather than burns. The later novel Mitti Bol Payi (2021), which won the Dhahan Prize, extended the same concerns into fiction.
## Reception & legacy

The book's journey is itself a story: serialized in nine Punjabi, Hindi, and Shahmukhi magazines, reprinted repeatedly, translated into Hindi (2007), Shahmukhi (2009), and English (2010), with an Urdu translation in 2021. The English edition's Crossword shortlisting in 2011 put Punjabi Dalit writing on the national literary map.

Chhangiya Rukh now stands with the foundational Dalit autobiographies of India — the Punjabi counterpart to the Marathi and Hindi classics of the genre — and it remains the indispensable first book for anyone seeking to understand caste in contemporary Punjab.

The translation history — Hindi in 2007, Shahmukhi in 2009, English in 2010, Urdu in 2021 — traces an expanding circle of recognition, each new language a new audience discovering that caste is not a regional story. The Crossword shortlisting in 2011 was symbolic: a Dalit autobiography from a Punjabi village, standing beside the English-language literary establishment's choices and belonging there. The book is now unavoidable in any serious account of modern Punjabi literature.
## Read it if...

You want to understand Punjab beyond the postcard — the Punjab of caste and labour that the songs leave out. Read it alongside the other great Indian autobiographies of self-making; then read Madhopuri's poems to hear the same voice in its other register.

You want the book that made Punjabi literature face itself. Chhangiya Rukh is not comfortable reading, and it isn't meant to be — it is meant to be true.
