Amrish Puri (22 June 1932 to 12 January 2005) was an Indian actor born in Nawanshahr, Punjab. A stage actor who reached films in his forties, he became Hindi cinema's best-known villain as Mogambo in Mr. India (1987). He also played Mola Ram in Hollywood's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984).

Early life

Amrish Lal Puri was born in a Punjabi Hindu family in Nawanshahr, to Lala Nihal Chand and Ved Kaur, according to Wikipedia and the Hindustan Times. Nawanshahr is the headquarters town and a tehsil of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, in Doaba. Filmfare quotes his son as saying "Naushera", but Wikipedia and the Hindustan Times name Nawanshahr.

His elder brothers Chaman Puri and Madan Puri were actors, and Wikipedia says the singer K. L. Saigal was his first cousin. He studied at B.M. College in Shimla.

Career

Puri came to Mumbai in the 1950s. The Indian Express says a director rejected his first screen test, calling his face harsh. He worked at the Employees' State Insurance Corporation, did radio at All India Radio from 1954, joined Ebrahim Alkazi's Natya Academy in 1961 and acted in Satyadev Dubey's plays. He won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for theatre in 1979.

The Hindustan Times says his first film appearance was Prem Pujari (1970), though the first film he had signed, Reshma Aur Shera, released in 1971. He was about 40. In the 1970s he worked with Girish Karnad on the Kannada film Kaadu, with Shyam Benegal on Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976) and Bhumika, and with Govind Nihalani on Aakrosh and Ardh Satya.

Wikipedia says Hum Paanch (1980) was the first film in which he played the main villain. Vidhaata and Shakti (1982) and Hero (1983) followed. For Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom he shaved his head and stayed bald afterwards. Steven Spielberg said, "Amrish is my favourite villain. The best the world has ever produced and ever will."

Mogambo and later roles

In Mr. India, directed by Shekhar Kapur, he played the scheming but comic Mogambo, whose line "Mogambo khush hua" became one of the best-known in Hindi cinema. Filmfare says he became the highest-paid villain.

He was not only a villain. He played the strict father Baldev Singh in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), and also appeared in Pardes, Virasat and the comedy Chachi 420. Wikipedia lists Filmfare Best Supporting Actor awards, including for Meri Jung and Virasat. After about twenty years away, he returned to Punjabi cinema in Shaheed Uddham Singh (2000), the Hindustan Times says. His last film, Kisna, released days after his death.

Film counts differ: about 300 (Filmfare), over 400 (Hindustan Times), more than 450 (Wikipedia).

Family life

He married Urmila Diveker, whom he met at the ESIC office, according to The Indian Express. Wikipedia and the Hindustan Times give 1957 for the marriage, while the Express says January 1959. They had a son, Rajeev, and a daughter, Namrata. His autobiography, The Act of Life, appeared in 2006.

Illness and death

The Indian Express reports that an accident on the set of Jaal: The Trap (2003) injured his face and eye, and his son later linked it to a blood disorder, myelodysplastic syndrome. He was admitted to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai on 27 December 2004 and died there on 12 January 2005, aged 72, according to Wikipedia. His funeral was held at Shivaji Park the next day.
