Om Puri (18 October 1950 to 6 January 2017) was an Indian actor from Ambala, in what was then East Punjab, who became one of the defining faces of Indian parallel cinema. He won two National Film Awards for Best Actor, received the Padma Shri in 1990, and carried his grounded, realistic style into British and Hollywood films such as East Is East and The Hundred-Foot Journey.

Early life in Ambala

Om Prakash Puri was born in Ambala into a Punjabi Hindu family. His father, Tek Chand Puri, served in the Indian Army and later worked on the railways. The family kept no birth certificate, and the date first entered in his school records, 9 March 1950, was assigned by an uncle. Puri later settled on 18 October 1950, working back from his mother's memory that he was born two days after the festival of Dussehra that year.

His childhood was marked by real hardship. When he was six, his father was imprisoned on an allegation of stealing cement from the railways and the family lost its home. His elder brother worked as a railway porter, while the young Om worked in a tea stall, took odd jobs and gathered coal from beside the railway tracks to help the household survive. Writers on his career often note how directly this early life fed the labourers, clerks and struggling men he later played on screen.

Training in Patiala, Delhi and Pune

Puri first turned towards the stage while studying at Khalsa College in Patiala, where he joined the local theatre group Punjab Kala Manch. He then won a place at the National School of Drama in Delhi and graduated in 1973, in the same circle as Naseeruddin Shah. Shah persuaded him to follow him to the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. He arrived there with very little money, and the discipline of those two institutions, first theatre and then film, became the foundation of his craft.

How did Om Puri become famous?

Om Puri became famous through India's parallel cinema, the serious, low budget film movement of the late 1970s and 1980s. His first significant film was the Marathi picture Ghashiram Kotwal in 1976, adapted from Vijay Tendulkar's play. In Govind Nihalani's Aakrosh (1980) he played Lahanya Bhiku, a tribal labourer accused of murdering his wife, almost entirely without dialogue, and won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In Arohan he played a poor landless farmer and won his first National Film Award for Best Actor. Then came Ardh Satya (1983), in which his honest police inspector, worn down by a corrupt system, won him a second National Award and the Best Actor prize at the Karlovy Vary festival. In the same year he showed the opposite of that intensity as the corrupt builder Ahuja in the satire Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, and he had already appeared briefly in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi (1982).

Parallel cinema and the commercial mainstream

Alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri, he became one of the emblematic actors of the art cinema movement, in films such as Bhavni Bhavai (1980), Mirch Masala (1987) and Dharavi (1992). Television gave him two of his most admired performances of the period: Satyajit Ray's Sadgati (1981) and Govind Nihalani's Tamas (1987), about the violence of Partition. He also narrated and acted in Shyam Benegal's television history Bharat Ek Khoj.

When parallel cinema faded in the 1990s, Puri moved into the commercial mainstream without losing his authority. He played police officers in Ghayal (1990) and Gupt (1997), a militant leader in Gulzar's Maachis (1996), and then revealed a gift for comedy that surprised audiences who knew only his serious work, in Chachi 420 (1997), Hera Pheri (2000), Malamaal Weekly (2006) and Chup Chup Ke (2006). Directors of popular cinema used him because a single scene with Puri could give a film weight.

An international career

From the early 1990s Puri built a second career abroad that few Indian actors of his generation matched. He played a Kolkata rickshaw puller opposite Patrick Swayze in City of Joy (1992), appeared with Jack Nicholson in Wolf (1994), and played a Pakistani taxi driver in Britain in My Son the Fanatic (1997). His best known international role came in East Is East (1999), as George Khan, a first generation immigrant father in northern England in conflict with his westernised children. He played the part as a frightened man defending his identity rather than as a simple tyrant, and it brought him a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Later international work included playing General Zia-ul-Haq in Charlie Wilson's War (2007), returning as George Khan in West Is West (2010), starring opposite Helen Mirren in The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014), a role in the Pakistani film Actor in Law (2016), and the voice of Bagheera in The Jungle Book (2016).

Honours and later life

India honoured him with the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian award, in 1990. In 2004 the United Kingdom made him an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to the British film industry. He also received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and, earlier, a special grand prize at the Montreal World Film Festival for his contribution to cinema. Puri died of a heart attack at his home in Andheri, Mumbai, on 6 January 2017, aged 66. Two of his films, Viceroy's House and Tubelight, were released after his death, and in February 2017 the Academy Awards in Los Angeles included him in its memorial tribute, a rare honour for an Indian actor.

Legacy

Om Puri's legacy rests on range proved over more than four decades. The same actor could carry the silence of Aakrosh, the moral collapse of Ardh Satya, the farce of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and the warmth of The Hundred-Foot Journey. He had none of the conventional glamour Hindi cinema usually demanded of its stars, and he turned that into his strength: audiences believed the ordinary people he played because he played them without vanity. For Punjab, his story begins in Ambala and in the theatre rooms of Patiala, and it remains one of the clearest examples of training and persistence carrying a boy from a railway town to world cinema.
