Ayushmann Khurrana: Chandigarh actor and singer

Ayushmann Khurrana (born Nishant Khurrana, 14 September 1984) is an actor and singer from Chandigarh who works in Hindi films. He is known for playing ordinary men who run into social taboos, and for the songs he writes and sings, starting with "Pani Da Rang".

Early life

Khurrana was born in Chandigarh on 14 September 1984 to Poonam and P. Khurrana, into a Punjabi Khatri family, according to Wikipedia. His father was an astrologer and author, and his parents renamed him Ayushmann when he was three. His younger brother, Aparshakti Khurana, is also an actor.

Chandigarh is a Union Territory and the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana. The Hindustan Times quotes Khurrana calling it "my home, my roots", and he says his hit songs, including "Pani Da Rang", were written there. He studied at St John's High School and DAV College in Chandigarh, then took a master's in mass communication at Panjab University. At DAV College he helped found the theatre groups Aaghaaz and Manchtantra, Wikipedia reports.

Speaking to Rolling Stone India, he said: "I am a Punjabi, but I have lived probably 20 years of my life in Haryana, in a city called Panchkula next to Chandigarh."

Career

Khurrana won the second season of the reality show MTV Roadies in 2004, then worked as a radio presenter at BIG FM in Delhi and as a television host. His first film, Vicky Donor (2012), cast him as a sperm donor. It earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for "Pani Da Rang", which he had written and composed with Rochak Kohli in 2003.

After a few flops, Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) revived his career. Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan followed in 2017. In 2018 he played a blind pianist in the thriller Andhadhun, which earned about 4.56 billion rupees worldwide and won him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Badhaai Ho, the same year, earned over 2.21 billion rupees.

In 2019 he starred in Article 15, a crime drama on caste discrimination that won him a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor, along with Dream Girl and Bala. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020) was described by Wikipedia as the first mainstream Bollywood film led by openly gay characters. Gulabo Sitabo (2020), with Amitabh Bachchan, premiered on Amazon Prime Video.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021), Anek, Doctor G and An Action Hero (2022) did not do well at the box office. Dream Girl 2 (2023) was his biggest hit since Bala, and Thamma came out in 2025. Wikipedia lists Pati Patni Aur Woh Do in 2026, with Udta Teer to follow.

Khurrana has sung in many of his films and released singles, and in 2015 he wrote the book Cracking the Code: My Journey in Bollywood with his wife. Forbes India ranked him 70th on its Celebrity 100 list in 2013 and 37th in 2019, and Wikipedia reports that Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2020.

UNICEF says he served as a Celebrity Advocate from 2020 and became its India National Ambassador in 2023.
