Sobha Singh (29 November 1901 to 22 August 1986) was a Punjabi painter whose portraits of the Sikh Gurus became the images by which millions picture the founders of the Sikh faith. Born at Sri Hargobindpur in Gurdaspur district, he trained briefly in Amritsar, served in the British Indian Army as a draughtsman, and after Partition settled at Andretta, where he painted for the rest of his life.

Early life in Sri Hargobindpur

Sobha Singh was born on 29 November 1901 in a Ramgarhia Sikh family at Sri Hargobindpur, a town on the bank of the Beas in Gurdaspur district, in Punjab's Majha region. His father, Deva Singh, had been in the Indian cavalry. He lost his mother in 1905, when he was four, and his father in 1917, when he was about sixteen. Every account agrees the boy drew constantly from an early age.

At the age of fifteen he entered the Industrial School at Amritsar for a one year course in art and craft. That brief course was his only recorded formal art training, but it set his direction: drawing became his trade as well as his calling, first in uniform and then, for more than sixty years, at his own easel.

Army draughtsman and first studios

In 1919 Sobha Singh joined the British Indian Army as a draughtsman and served in Baghdad, in Mesopotamia, now Iraq. Army drafting sharpened his line and discipline, and the Western academic realism he absorbed then stayed in his painting for life. He left the army in 1923 and returned to Amritsar, where he opened a studio, first at Bazar Mai Sewan and later near Jallianwala Bagh. In the same year, on Baisakhi day, he married Bibi Inder Kaur.

Studio years took him across Punjab and beyond: Lahore from 1926, Delhi from 1931, with a studio in Connaught Place, where he stayed for twelve years and became a familiar figure in the capital's cultural life. He painted his first Sohni Mahiwal at Delhi, and it brought him early fame. He also lived for a time at Preet Nagar, the writers' colony between Lahore and Amritsar, with the novelist Nanak Singh and the writer Gurbax Singh.

Why did Sobha Singh settle in Andretta?

Sobha Singh settled in Andretta because Partition took away his Lahore home, and the Kangra valley gave him the quiet he wanted. In 1946 he had gone back to Lahore, opened a studio at Anarkali and was working as an art director on a film when Partition forced him to leave the city. He first came to Andretta in 1947, shortly after Partition. Norah Richards, the Irish born founder of Punjabi theatre who lived there, was a deciding factor, and in 1949 he settled there for good.

Andretta was then a remote village near Palampur, set in the Kangra valley under the Dhauladhar hills. It suited a painter who rose before dawn, read Emerson, Krishnamurti and Khalil Gibran, and could sit at his easel for twelve hours a day, as he still did in his eighties. He once turned down the offer of a plot in Chandigarh, saying Andretta was beautiful and peaceful. He stayed there for the rest of his life, producing hundreds of paintings.

The Guru portraits and Sohni Mahiwal

Painting the Gurus, Sobha Singh said, was the work nearest to his real self, and it is the work the world knows him by. His earliest painting in the series, the birth of Guru Nanak, was made in 1934, showing the child Nanak in his mother Mata Tripta's lap. In 1937 came the meditative portrait captioned Nam Khumari Nanaka, Charhi Rahe Din Raat, with the Guru's eyes lowered in trance. The portrait he made for the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in 1969 won the widest fame of all: reproduced in homes, gurdwaras and calendars, it is the face most people now picture when they think of Guru Nanak.

He painted Guru Gobind Singh for the Guru's 300th birth anniversary, plus Guru Amar Das, Guru Tegh Bahadur meditating at Baba Bakala, and Guru Har Krishan healing the sick in Delhi. From Punjabi folklore he took the great love stories: Sohni Mahiwal, which he painted again and again and which many rate his masterpiece, Heer Ranjha, and Sassi Punnu, painted as early as 1929. From his Kangra years came the Kangra Bride and Gaddan, his portrait of a Gaddi girl. He also painted Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Bhagat Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, and his thirty foot mural panel on the evolution of Sikh history hangs in the art gallery of Parliament House in New Delhi.

He worked in sculpture too, making busts of M. S. Randhawa, Prithviraj Kapoor and Nirmal Chandra. His head study of the poet Amrita Pritam was left unfinished.

Honours and later life

Honours came late, and then in a rush. Punjabi University, Patiala, made him a fellow in 1970 and later conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Literature. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting made a documentary on his life, Painter of the People, and the BBC made a documentary on him in 1984. The Punjab Government named him State Artist in 1974, the Punjab Arts Council gave him its highest award in 1982, and in 1983 the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian honour.

His wife Inder Kaur died in 1967. In his last years at Andretta his daughter Gurcharan Kaur and her family looked after him, and he kept painting: a large portrait of Guru Ravidas was left unfinished. Sobha Singh died at the PGI in Chandigarh in August 1986, aged 84. Most modern accounts give the date as 22 August, while the Encyclopedia of Sikhism entry gives 21 August.

Legacy

The originals of his paintings are kept at the Sobha Singh Art Gallery and Museum at Andretta, where his studio can also be visited. His daughter Gurcharan Kaur and her son Dr Hirday Paul Singh have kept the gallery as a place of pilgrimage for art lovers. Andretta, a village few outsiders could have found on a map in 1949, is now known across the world because he lived there. In 2001 the Government of India issued a postage stamp in his honour for his birth centenary, and in 2023 his grandson Dr Hirday Paul Singh published the biography Sobha Singh Artist: Life and Legacy. His deepest legacy, though, is on the wall: the calm Guru Nanak, hand raised in blessing, that hangs in Sikh homes everywhere is, in the public mind, his Nanak.
