Sukhwinder Amrit (born 11 December 1963) is one of the leading Punjabi poets of her generation, best known for her ghazals and for verse that speaks plainly about women's lives. Born in Sadarpura village in Ludhiana district, she published her first book in 1997 and won the Punjab government's Shiromani Punjabi Kavi Puraskar in 2008.
Early life
According to BBC News Punjabi, Sukhwinder was born in Sadarpura, in Jagraon tehsil, to Gurnam Singh and Amarjit Kaur. She was the eldest of four sisters and had one brother. She began rhyming songs as a child, but the household did not allow it, and she says her mother, afraid of her father's temper, would throw her song notebook into the hearth. A janam sakhi of Guru Nanak read aloud at home at night was the one good habit that gave her a love of reading.
She was taken out of school after class nine and married at seventeen to Amarjit Singh of Ludhiana. In her telling to BBC Punjabi, her mother-in-law burned her notebook too. Eleven years into the marriage she won her husband's permission to study and write. She sat her class ten exam at the same school her children attended, and later completed an MA in Punjabi. She also lectured for a year at a government college in Ludhiana, per Wikipedia.
Career
Her first collection of ghazals, Suraj Di Dehleez, came out in 1997. A Tribune review in 1999 noted that she had very little formal education and called her a skilful composer of ghazals, describing her second book, Chiragan Di Daar, as a set of 62 ghazals. More followed: Kanian (2000), Patjhar Vich Pungarde Patte (2002), Dhupp Di Chunni (2006), Hazaar Rangan Di Laat (2008), the ghazal book Puniyaan (2011), a songs collection Neeleya Mora Ve (2012) and Chirriyan (2014). She also edited Kesar De Chhitte (2003). BBC Punjabi counts nine books in all, and says she has translated four from Hindi into Punjabi, among them Dharamvir Bharati's Kanupriya and Andha Yug.
Much of her writing deals with the way a male-dominated society presses down on women. Her poem Uh Purush, in Kanian, is one example; asked whether it was about her father, she told BBC Punjabi it was about patriarchy itself, which she had first seen in her closest relationships. Dalip Kaur Tiwana, in a Jalandhar Doordarshan documentary quoted by BBC, called her one of those rare women who play with life like pebbles.
Her honours, as listed on Wikipedia, include the Bawa Balwant Puraskar (1999), the Matru Pitru Puraskar (2002), the Amrita Pritam Puraskar from the Prof Mohan Singh Foundation (2006), the Gurmukh Singh Musafir and Kartar Singh Dhaliwal awards (both 2007) and the Shiromani Punjabi Kavi Puraskar (2008). She has also read at the All India Radio Sarvabhasha Kavi Sammelan (2007), the World Punjabi Conference in Lahore (2001) and the SAARC Festival of Literature in Agra (2013), and at programmes in Britain, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
In 2018, as Surjit Patar urged writers to take on Punjab's drug crisis, The Indian Express quoted her lines: the youth are dying, so if not now, when will the pen be used? Her life has since reached the stage: a one-actor play based on it, Rahan Ch Angiyar Bade Si, written by Rajwinder Samralia and performed by Aks Rang Manch Samrala, was shown in Amritsar in April 2024.
Personal life
She lives in Mohali with her husband Amarjit Singh, where BBC Punjabi met her in 2024. She says that once her poetry won recognition, her family began to take pride in it, and even her mother-in-law welcomed each new book.
