Sukhwinder Amrit (born 11 December 1963) is one of the leading Punjabi poets of her generation, best known for her ghazals and for verse that speaks plainly about women's lives. Born in Sadarpura village in Ludhiana district, she published her first book in 1997 after years in which her family burned her notebooks to stop her writing, and she won the Punjab government's Shiromani Punjabi Kavi Puraskar in 2008.
According to BBC News Punjabi, Sukhwinder was born in Sadarpura, in Jagraon tehsil, to Gurnam Singh and Amarjit Kaur. She was the eldest of four sisters and had one brother. The house lived in fear of her father's temper, and the children would hide when they heard his voice. She began rhyming songs as a child, but the household did not allow it: her mother, afraid of her father, would throw her song notebook into the hearth and warn her that her father would kill her if she wrote songs again, a threat Sukhwinder told the BBC she truly believed. A janam sakhi of Guru Nanak was kept at home and read aloud by her mother before sleep, and once Sukhwinder could read, narrating it became her duty. It was the one habit that gave her a love of reading.
She was taken out of school after class nine and married at seventeen to Amarjit Singh of Ludhiana. In her telling to BBC Punjabi, her mother-in-law burned her notebook too, and she was not allowed to write songs in her new home either. A study of her poetry notes that after the burnings she began committing her poems to memory, so that no one could take them from her. Eleven years into the marriage she won her husband's permission to study and write. She sat her class ten exam at the same school her children attended, and later completed an MA in Punjabi. She also lectured for a year at a government college in Ludhiana, per Wikipedia.
Books and career
Her first collection of ghazals, Suraj Di Dehleez, came out in 1997. A Tribune review in 1999 noted that she had very little formal education and called her a skilful composer of ghazals, describing her second book, Chiragan Di Daar, as a set of 62 ghazals. More followed: Kanian (2000), Patjhar Vich Pungarde Patte (2002), Dhupp Di Chunni (2006), Hazaar Rangan Di Laat (2008), the ghazal book Puniyaan (2011), a songs collection Neeleya Mora Ve (2012) and Chirriyan (2014). She also edited Kesar De Chhitte (2003). BBC Punjabi counts nine books in all, and says she has translated four from Hindi into Punjabi, among them Dharamvir Bharati's Kanupriya and Andha Yug.
Critics have pointed out that a strong ghazal writer is rarely also a strong writer of the nazm, the free-standing poem, yet she has done well in both forms. One critical study of her work places her in the company of Faiz, Sahir, Mohan Singh and Surjit Patar in this respect, and finds her at her best in her short poems, where she turns inward to examine love and the self. Her long poems return to the house she grew up in, working through metaphor rather than direct accusation.
Themes: women's lives and the pain of Punjab
Much of her writing deals with the way a male-dominated society presses down on women. Her poem Uh Purush, in Kanian, pictures a household freezing at one man's presence: the lamp dims, the dough falls from the mother's hand, the little sisters hide behind doors. Asked whether it was about her father, she told BBC Punjabi it was about male dominance itself, which women have endured for centuries and which she had first seen in her closest relationships, and she said such poems end with a call to speak out and rebel. She told the BBC she feels she has also written her mother's joys and sorrows, the life her mother could never speak aloud.
Her pen has also turned on Punjab's public wounds. In 2018, as Surjit Patar urged writers to take on the drug crisis, The Indian Express quoted her lines: the youth are dying, so if not now, when will the pen be used? Migration is another of her subjects: in Asees (The Blessing), a poem in Dhupp Di Chunni, a mother blesses a son leaving for Australia for higher studies and reminds herself that no one can fight life's battles from behind four walls. She has also spoken plainly about women's place in Punjabi letters, telling BBC Punjabi that literary stages are still mostly filled by men and that a woman must prove herself at every step, though she sees more girls entering literature now.
Honours and readings
Her honours, as listed on Wikipedia, include the Bawa Balwant Puraskar from the Punjabi Sahit Trust, Dhudike (1999), the Matru Pitru Puraskar (2002), the Amrita Pritam Puraskar from the Prof Mohan Singh Foundation (2006), the Gurmukh Singh Musafir and Kartar Singh Dhaliwal awards (both 2007) and the Shiromani Punjabi Kavi Puraskar of the Punjab language department (2008). Senior writers encouraged her along the way, among them Surjit Patar, Gurbachan Singh Bhullar, Sant Singh Sekhon and Mohan Singh, and she won praise from the women writers Ajeet Cour and Dalip Kaur Tiwana, who in a Jalandhar Doordarshan documentary quoted by the BBC called her one of those rare women who play with life like pebbles.
She has read at the All India Radio Sarvabhasha Kavi Sammelan (2007), the World Punjabi Conference in Lahore (2001) and the SAARC Festival of Literature in Agra (2013), took part in a women's conference at Kwantlen University in Surrey, Canada, and has read at programmes in Britain, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
Personal life and legacy
She lives in Mohali with her husband Amarjit Singh, where BBC Punjabi met her in 2024. She says that once her poetry won recognition, her family began to take pride in it, and even her mother-in-law welcomed each new book and urged her to write more. Her life has since reached the stage: a one-actor play based on it, Rahan Ch Angiyar Bade Si, written by Rajwinder Samralia and performed by Aks Rang Manch Samrala, was shown in Amritsar in April 2024. For many readers she stands as proof that a village girl who was stopped from holding a pen can still become one of the defining voices of her language.
