Sukhwinder Singh: Voice of Chaiyya Chaiyya

Sukhwinder Singh (born 1971), known to fans as Sukhi, is a playback singer, composer and lyricist from Amritsar, Punjab. His voice carries some of Hindi cinema's biggest songs, from "Chaiyya Chaiyya" (1998) to "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire. He has won a National Film Award and two Filmfare awards for playback singing.

Early life

Sukhwinder Singh was born on 18 July 1971 in Amritsar, into a Sikh family. "I was born in Amritsar," he told Hindustan Times in 2023, remembering Lohri mornings when the sky filled with thousands of kites and he flew them from the terrace for hours.

Music reached him through the gurdwara. In interviews he has said he began singing at the age of seven or eight, and that people first heard his voice in Gurbani. As a boy he went to Darbar Sahib, the Golden Temple, to sing shabads, and he describes the atmosphere there as having become his mother and father. He also ran sprints in his youth before music took over, and trained under the Punjab-based musician B. S. Narang.

Career

As a teenager he released the Punjabi album Munda Southhall Da with T. Singh. He then caught the attention of the composer duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal, working for them as a music arranger and singing chorus lines and short passages on their projects. His early credits include a share of "Chitthi Aayi Hai" in Naam (1986) and the solo "Aaja Sanam" in Khilaaf (1991).

The turn came with A. R. Rahman. Sukhwinder sang "Lucky Lucky" in the Tamil film Ratchagan (1997), then "Chaiyya Chaiyya" in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se.. (1998), picturised on Shah Rukh Khan and his co-stars dancing on top of a moving train. The song, written by Gulzar and sung as a duet with Sapna Awasthi, won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and made him a household name across India.

Hit after hit followed, among them "Dard-e-Disco" in Om Shanti Om, "Chak De India" and "Haule Haule" in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), which brought a second Filmfare award. He also sang "Ghanan Ghanan" in Lagaan (2001).

In 2008 he was among the performers of "Jai Ho" in Slumdog Millionaire. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 81st Academy Awards and a Grammy at the 52nd Grammy Awards. In March 2015 he was named winner of the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer at the 62nd National Film Awards for "Bismil" in Vishal Bhardwaj's Haider, with lyrics by Gulzar.

He has recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, Urdu and Bengali, and sang the anthem of the 2023 Men's FIH Hockey World Cup, "Jai Ho Hindustan Ki". In a 2024 interview with The Hindu he said he never walks on stage with a fixed playlist and had joined a music academy in Mumbai the year before to study Carnatic music and ragas again.

Punjab in his music

Sukhwinder lives in Mumbai, but Punjab stays close. In a 2025 Bombay Times interview he recalled Baisakhi in his village and said he would fly to Amritsar straight after a show in Ras Al-Khaimah. His memories: white kurtas and turbans, bhangra, wrestling bouts and langar sweets. He named "Aaj Mera Jee Karda" from Monsoon Wedding, "Chaiyya Chaiyya" and "Layi Vi Na Gayee" from Chalte Chalte as the songs through which he carried Punjabi energy into Bollywood. He also used the interview to wish for a drug-free Punjab and to speak about the state's water and pollution problems.
