Where is Galib?

Galib is a village of Ajnala tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Ajnala, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ajnala community development block and is served by the Gahalib gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037256, and it covers 204 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 811 people in Galib: 428 men and 383 women, living in 149 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 204 hectares, the population density works out to about 398 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 895 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 99, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 355 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.94 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.63 per cent and women at 62.79 per cent. The census recorded 303 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 241 main workers, the largest group, 103, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 81 cultivators on their own land and 55 agricultural labourers. A further 62 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Galib's land. Of the village's 204 hectares, 179 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (179 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 88 cultivators and 61 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
