Where is Galowali?

Galowali is a village in Majitha tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Majitha, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majitha community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037434, and it covers 490 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,652 people in Galowali: 1,879 men and 1,773 women, living in 645 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 490 hectares, the population density works out to about 745 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 944 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 546, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 3,448 people, about 94 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 49.39 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 54.44 per cent and women at 44.18 per cent. The census recorded 1,656 workers, about 45 per cent of the village. Of the 1,137 main workers, the largest group, 544, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 537 agricultural labourers and 42 cultivators on their own land. A further 519 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Galowali's land. Of the village's 490 hectares, 438 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (200 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (238 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 45 cultivators and 787 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Majitha, the tehsil headquarters, and Amritsar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Dadupura and Wadala Viram.
