Where is Kohali?

Kohali is a village of Lopoke tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Raja Sansi, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Chogawan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037313, and it covers 980 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 5,079 people in Kohali: 2,735 men and 2,344 women, living in 908 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 980 hectares, the population density works out to about 518 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 857 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 519, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,851 people, about 36 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.97 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.62 per cent and women at 62.75 per cent. The census recorded 1,553 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 1,436 main workers, the largest group, 847, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 456 cultivators on their own land and 100 agricultural labourers. A further 117 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Kohali's land. Of the village's 980 hectares, 899 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (99 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (800 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 468 cultivators and 106 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Lopoke, the tehsil headquarters, and Amritsar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Madoke, Rakh Kohali and Barar.
