Where is Bugran?

Bugran is a village of Rampura Phul tehsil in Bathinda district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rampura Phul, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Phul community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035670, and it covers 490 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,054 people in Bugran: 1,053 men and 1,001 women, living in 405 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 490 hectares, the population density works out to about 419 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 951 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 221, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 844 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 65.36 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.77 per cent and women at 59.82 per cent. The census recorded 737 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 640 main workers, the largest group, 226, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 226 agricultural labourers and 108 household industry workers. A further 97 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Bugran's land. Of the village's 490 hectares, 421 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (200 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (221 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 237 cultivators and 251 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
