Where is Sadiq?

Sadiq is a village of Faridkot tehsil in Faridkot district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Guru Har Sahai, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Faridkot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035509, and it covers 1,287 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 7,384 people in Sadiq: 3,852 men and 3,532 women, living in 1,435 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 1,287 hectares, the population density works out to about 574 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 917 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 973, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 3,067 people, about 42 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 65.54 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.69 per cent and women at 58.81 per cent. The census recorded 2,419 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 2,153 main workers, the largest group, 917, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 659 agricultural labourers and 525 cultivators on their own land. A further 266 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Sadiq's land. Of the village's 1,287 hectares, 1,158 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (823 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (335 hectares). About 126 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 552 cultivators and 780 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, 2 government middle schools, one government secondary school and one government senior secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 12. Faridkot, the tehsil headquarters, and Faridkot town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Sangatpura, Rupianwala, Kauni and Sangrahur.
