Where is Sukchain?

Sukchain is a village of Abohar tehsil in Fazilka district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Abohar, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Abohar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035214, and it covers 1,331 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,020 people in Sukchain: 1,573 men and 1,447 women, living in 588 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 1,331 hectares, the population density works out to about 227 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 920 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 402, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 457 people, about 15 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.5 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.61 per cent and women at 49.32 per cent. The census recorded 979 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 881 main workers, the largest group, 428, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 356 agricultural labourers and 96 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 98 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Sukchain's land. Of the village's 1,331 hectares, 1,227 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 1,212 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (1,212 hectares). About 104 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 467 cultivators and 409 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Abohar, the tehsil headquarters, and Fazilka town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Sito Gunno, Khairpur, Mehrajpur and Bhagsar.
