Where is Kasoana?

Kasoana is a village of Zira tehsil in Ferozepur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Zira, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Zira community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034391, and it covers 730 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,694 people in Kasoana: 833 men and 861 women, living in 341 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 730 hectares, the population density works out to about 232 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1034 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 205, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 921 people, about 54 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 60.71 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.08 per cent and women at 54.7 per cent. The census recorded 803 workers, about 47 per cent of the village. Of the 714 main workers, the largest group, 410, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 216 cultivators on their own land and 72 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 89 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Kasoana's land. Of the village's 730 hectares, 719 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (635 hectares). About 10 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. The census recorded 222 cultivators and 486 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Drinking water came from untreated tap water supplies. The village had its own post office. It also had a PDS ration shop and mobile phone coverage. The directory recorded Zira, about 14 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Zira, the tehsil headquarters, and Ferozepur town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Markhai, Marur, Mehar Singhwala and Mankianwali.
