Where is Amroh?

Amroh is a village of Mukerian tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 22 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031336, and it covers 208 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,034 people in Amroh: 510 men and 524 women, living in 214 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 208 hectares, the population density works out to about 497 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1027 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 120, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 311 people, about 30 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.29 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.05 per cent and women at 84.6 per cent. The census recorded 291 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 213 main workers, the largest group, 145, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 61 agricultural labourers and 4 household industry workers. A further 78 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Amroh's land. Of the village's 208 hectares, 88 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 43 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (43 hectares). About 86 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 7 cultivators and 63 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school, one government secondary school and one government senior secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 12. Mukerian, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Alera, Nangal Khanauran, Dharampur and Sikri Uraf Ramgarh.
