Where is Arthewal?

Arthewal is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hazipur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031242, and it covers 56 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 367 people in Arthewal: 200 men and 167 women, living in 68 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 56 hectares, the population density works out to about 655 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 835 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 37, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 180 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.82 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.36 per cent and women at 76.62 per cent. The census recorded 97 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 44 main workers, the largest group, 23, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 20 other workers in trade, transport and services and 1 agricultural labourers. A further 53 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

With 23 cultivators and 12 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Liddar, Badhan, Sudhari and Jiwanwal.
