Where is Batwara?

Batwara is a village of Mukerian tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 22 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031330, and it covers 231 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,333 people in Batwara: 665 men and 668 women, living in 290 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 231 hectares, the population density works out to about 577 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1005 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 165, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 211 people, about 16 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.01 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 94.44 per cent and women at 81.76 per cent. The census recorded 450 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 396 main workers, the largest group, 285, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 67 household industry workers and 23 agricultural labourers. A further 54 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (4 hectares). About 65 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 21 cultivators and 31 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
