Where is Beh Jagan?

Beh Jagan is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and is served by the Beh--Jagan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031277, and it covers 206 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,341 people in Beh Jagan: 1,191 men and 1,150 women, living in 459 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 206 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,136 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 966 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 260, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,074 people, about 46 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.77 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.77 per cent and women at 79.71 per cent. The census recorded 614 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 493 main workers, the largest group, 432, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 38 cultivators on their own land and 17 household industry workers. A further 121 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Beh Jagan's land. Of the village's 206 hectares, 141 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 118 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (118 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 47 cultivators and 66 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Mukerian, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Banbindra Ban, Gawal Chak Shangaru, Gawal Chak Jassu and Namoli.
