Where is Namoli?

Namoli is a village of Mukerian tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and is served by the Namoli, Abadi Tote gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031279, and it covers 327 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,037 people in Namoli: 1,046 men and 991 women, living in 402 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 327 hectares, the population density works out to about 623 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 947 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 274, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 516 people, about 25 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.37 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.31 per cent and women at 82.36 per cent. The census recorded 523 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 398 main workers, the largest group, 368, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 23 cultivators on their own land and 6 household industry workers. A further 125 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Namoli's land. Of the village's 327 hectares, 260 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 143 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (50 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (93 hectares). About 52 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 40 cultivators and 29 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
