Where is Charial?

Charial is a village in Hoshiarpur tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-I community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031619, and it covers 129 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 755 people in Charial: 402 men and 353 women, living in 166 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 129 hectares, the population density works out to about 585 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 878 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 92, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 301 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 90.65 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 95.42 per cent and women at 85.35 per cent. The census recorded 247 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 223 main workers, the largest group, 161, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 38 agricultural labourers and 16 cultivators on their own land. A further 24 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Charial's land. Of the village's 129 hectares, 113 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 108 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (108 hectares). About 10 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 23 cultivators and 42 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Hoshiarpur, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bains Khurd, Kheowal, Sothiana and Lachowal.
