Where is Dada?

Dada is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031474, and it covers 2,459 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,844 people in Dada: 955 men and 889 women, living in 371 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 2,459 hectares, the population density works out to about 75 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 931 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 230, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,693 people, about 92 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.35 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.85 per cent and women at 76.62 per cent. The census recorded 537 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 288 main workers, the largest group, 189, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 59 agricultural labourers and 31 cultivators on their own land. A further 249 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dada's land. Of the village's 2,459 hectares, 178 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (126 hectares). About 134 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 35 cultivators and 215 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
