Dagana Kalan is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-I community development block and is served by the Dagana--Kalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031571, and it covers 268 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,539 people in Dagana Kalan: 778 men and 761 women, living in 341 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 268 hectares, the population density works out to about 574 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 978 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 132, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 767 people, about 50 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 89.91 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 93 per cent and women at 86.72 per cent. The census recorded 509 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 466 main workers, the largest group, 232, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 117 agricultural labourers and 100 cultivators on their own land. A further 43 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
