Where is Chitton?

Chitton is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031546, and it covers 293 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,532 people in Chitton: 779 men and 753 women, living in 301 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 293 hectares, the population density works out to about 523 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 967 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 181, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 343 people, about 22 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.65 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.84 per cent and women at 70.5 per cent. The census recorded 548 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 461 main workers, the largest group, 183, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 171 other workers in trade, transport and services and 104 agricultural labourers. A further 87 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
