Where is Haizam?

Haizam is a village of Dasua tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Urmar Tanda, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-I community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030695, and it covers 220 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 668 people in Haizam: 364 men and 304 women, living in 129 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 220 hectares, the population density works out to about 304 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 835 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 73, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 423 people, about 63 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.88 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.2 per cent and women at 81.92 per cent. The census recorded 226 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 226 main workers, the largest group, 95, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 79 agricultural labourers and 51 cultivators on their own land.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Haizam's land. Of the village's 220 hectares, 188 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (188 hectares). About 30 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 51 cultivators and 79 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
