Where is Hambran?

Hambran is a village of Dasua tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Urmar Tanda, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tanda community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030705, and it covers 74 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 464 people in Hambran: 250 men and 214 women, living in 87 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 74 hectares, the population density works out to about 627 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 856 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 47, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 365 people, about 79 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.3 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.59 per cent and women at 63.59 per cent. The census recorded 177 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 143 main workers, the largest group, 102, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 33 agricultural labourers and 5 cultivators on their own land. A further 34 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Hambran's land. Of the village's 74 hectares, 61 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 60 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (60 hectares). About 13 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 5 cultivators and 43 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
