Where is Jagal?

Jagal is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and is served by the Aglaur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030958, and it covers 206 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 419 people in Jagal: 218 men and 201 women, living in 83 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 206 hectares, the population density works out to about 203 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 922 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 35, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 48 people, about 11 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.5 per cent and women at 82.07 per cent. The census recorded 100 workers, about 24 per cent of the village. Of the 100 main workers, the largest group, 62, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 28 cultivators on their own land and 10 other workers in trade, transport and services.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Jagal's land. Of the village's 206 hectares, 153 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 131 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (46 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (85 hectares). About 38 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 28 cultivators and 62 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
