Where is Raili?

Raili is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hazipur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031113, and it covers 216 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,778 people in Raili: 874 men and 904 women, living in 376 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 216 hectares, the population density works out to about 823 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1034 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 195, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 344 people, about 19 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.5 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.66 per cent and women at 85.54 per cent. The census recorded 415 workers, about 23 per cent of the village. Of the 323 main workers, the largest group, 221, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 90 cultivators on their own land and 9 agricultural labourers. A further 92 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Raili's land. Of the village's 216 hectares, 122 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 30 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (30 hectares). About 94 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 94 cultivators and 20 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
