Where is Sheikh?

Sheikh is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and is served by the Pandori--Atwalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030900, and it covers 171 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 413 people in Sheikh: 197 men and 216 women, living in 101 households, an average of about 4.1 people per household. Spread over its 171 hectares, the population density works out to about 242 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1096 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 45, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 85 people, about 21 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.46 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.06 per cent and women at 64.95 per cent. The census recorded 94 workers, about 23 per cent of the village. Of the 93 main workers, the largest group, 37, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 29 agricultural labourers and 23 cultivators on their own land. A further 1 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Sheikh's land. Of the village's 171 hectares, 133 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 100 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (100 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 15 hours a day. The census recorded 23 cultivators and 30 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The Census 2011 Village Directory gives the fullest picture of village facilities. Education in the village runs through one government primary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 5. The village also had an anganwadi centre.

The directory recorded Dasua, about 15 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Dasua, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Pandori Atwalan, Ramtatwali, Gondpur and Raghwal.
