Where is Mattewara?

Mattewara is a village of Ludhiana East tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Ludhiana, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ludhiana-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033438, and it covers 1,022 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,435 people in Mattewara: 753 men and 682 women, living in 282 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 1,022 hectares, the population density works out to about 140 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 906 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 171, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 951 people, about 66 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.19 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.25 per cent and women at 70.72 per cent. The census recorded 569 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 541 main workers, the largest group, 413, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 85 agricultural labourers and 25 cultivators on their own land. A further 28 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
